I purchased this piece at an estate sale in Ipswich

which likely once had a lid

but I have not been able to find it in the The New Yorker's archive in order to date it--but surely what makes for demographic perfection has become more complex and conflicted since it was published

This is a gorgeous vintage handmade pine wood box—I believe technically a knife or utensil box

Nice and weighty

Trench Art Round Lidded Metal Box vintage wood box I purchased this piece atI am not super confident about identifying trench art objects made by soldiers or civilians during wartime, from whatever materials they had at hand but my guess is that this small lidded box is an example, made of an old shell casing. I really love the surface, with this matte copper colored finish worn away around the edges, and its simplicity; just an honestly made thing. 2 1 4" in diameter x 1 18" tall.
